Message from the Maestro
Happy Summer! For me, summers are a time to study scores for the upcoming season. In December, I will be conducting Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring for the first time. I am reading a lot about this piece, and my favorite resource so far is this percussionist's guide by Chris DeChiara published in 2020. He breaks down choices of instrument, timpani arrangement, mallet/stick choices, and how to divide personnel. But more importantly, he delves into artistic execusion and the many errors corrected in later revisions of this piece.
Here he is demonstrating a very difficult metric modulation involving bass drum, timpani, tam-tam, and guiro (in this case, replaced with a washboard). Happy listening!
