About LUCO

The Lake Union Civic Orchestra is dedicated to the exploration and performance of symphonic and chamber music with energy and passion; and to sharing that experience with individuals and organizations throughout the community. LUCO succeeds in its vision thanks to the generous financial contributions from corporations, foundations, and individuals.

The orchestra came to life in February of 1995, when John Alderete, a graduate student at the University of Washington and a classically trained violinist, formed an ensemble to play together for pleasure. In the early days, the group he formed at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center was known as the Lake Union Chamber Orchestra. LUCO now has over sixty-five members, an established concert season, and performs throughout the greater Puget Sound region With the exception of the Music Director and Concertmaster, the musicians and Board of Directors consist entirely of volunteers.

In addition to the concert series at Town Hall, the orchestra has also performed all three Tchaikovsky’s ballets (Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty) with the Evergreen City Ballet in Auburn. For two summers LUCO presented a ‘Pops’ concert at the Lakewold Gardens and Estate in Tacoma, and the past two seasons with the Tacoma City Ballet for their spring productions.
