Joseph Bozich
A resident of Puyallup, Washington, Joseph R. Bozich is an undergraduate studying Music Education at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. As a saxophonist, he was the winner of the Tacoma Philharmonic Beatrice Herrmann Young Artist Solo Competition in 2010 and was a national finalist in the 2011 MTNA Young Artist solo competition. In March, 2012, he appeared with the University of Puget Sound Wind Ensemble as a winner of the University of Puget Sound Concerto/Aria Competition, playing David Maslanka's Concerto for Alto Saxophone. As a member of the Puget Sound Saxophone Quartet, the group took 3rd Place at the MTNA National Chamber Music Competition and won the Seattle Ladies' Musical Club Chamber Music Competition in 2012. He has performed in master classes with artists including Eugene Rousseau, John Sampen, Timothy McAllister, Jonathan Helton, and Julia Nolan, and currently studies saxophone with Fred Winkler, affiliate faculty at the University of Puget Sound.
As a composer, his works have been premiered by the University of Puget Sound Wind Ensemble, the University of Puget Sound Jazz Band, and the University of Puget Sound/Pacific Lutheran University Saxophone Ensemble. In April 2012, he conducted the premiere of his Concerto for Baritone Saxophone, Small Orchestra, and DJ with guest soloist Erik Steighner, professor of saxophone at Pacific Lutheran University, and a recital orchestra assembled for the occasion. He has been the recipient of three summer research grants for composition from the University of Puget Sound, the most recent of which is for a Chain-Symphony for Wind Ensemble and Electronics, to be premiered next year by a recital ensemble. He currently studies composition with Dr. Robert Hutchinson, professor of theory and composition at the University of Puget Sound, and he will be a fellow at Brevard Music Center during the Summer 2012 season.
As a conductor, he has appeared with numerous student recital ensembles, the University of Puget Sound Concert Band, and is currently the Assistant Conductor with the Lake Union Civic Orchestra (LUCO). This coming fall he will be leading LUCO in a performance of Robert Schumann's 4th symphony, as well as putting on a recital featuring Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring Suite in the original ballet scoring for thirteen instruments. He currently studies conducting with Gerard Morris, Director of Winds and Percussion at the University of Puget Sound, and Maestro Christophe Chagnard, music director of the Lake Union Civic Orchestra and the Northwest Sinfonietta.
