Mission
The Lake Union Civic Orchestra is dedicated to the exploration and performance of symphonic and chamber music with energy and passion; and to sharing that experience with individuals and organizations throughout the community.
About
LUCO is a largely volunteer-run, Seattle-based community orchestra distinguished by superb musicianship, low ticket prices, friendly atmosphere, central location of concerts, and exciting, innovative programming.
Local music critic Christopher DiLaurenti wrote, "LUCO's concerts have a homey feel missing from most classical music gigs; before the show, people laugh an chat casually as if at home. Yet when the music begins, the audience's attention becomes steadfast and quieter than most other orchestral performances I attend." (The Stranger, January, 2008.)
Lake Union Civic Orchestra Programs
Each season, LUCO presents four full orchestral concerts. We focus on presenting both popular as well as newer or less well-known works, including works by living and/or local composers. Concerts for the past three seasons have been attended by an average of 300 people each. LUCO has a generous complimentary ticket program to encourage those who have never seen a classical music concert, or those who cannot afford it, to attend.
Each year, LUCO presents a free chamber music program. Musicians from the orchestra present a variety of works in an intimate setting. This gives audience members a chance to hear classical music on a smaller, more detailed scale than the full orchestra concerts, and also gives LUCO members (high-level amateur players) a chance to perform chamber works.
While LUCO primarily comprises talented amateur musicans, LUCO strives to serve local professional musicians by hiring local professionals to play concertos with the orchestra and by commissioning works from local composers.
Recent Successes
In January of 2009, LUCO had its first performance in Meany Hall. The concert, including works by Wagner and Mahler, was a success (over 400 audience members). Local blogger Andy Nicastro wrote: "By the end of the evening there was no doubt that this ensemble was capable of playing larger venues - part of the charm of the concert was the cozy ambiance between the musicians and the audience... (full disclosure, I know no one in LUCO). They are passionate about music." In the future, we hope to continue expanding our geographic accessibility, thus increasing the number of people who can attend.
